About the artist:
Wilhelmina Peace is an award-winning artist and printmaker based at Vault Artist Studios in Belfast. Born in New York, she spent her formative years on the outskirts of Paris, France, before moving to Northern Ireland for her studies in 2009. She obtained first class degrees both in Cultural Anthropology and Fine Art Printmaking. Her work has been exhibited across Ireland, the British Isles, and the United States, and is held in numerous private collections in different countries.
Working across drawing and printmaking, particularly etching and lithography, Peace’s practice is deeply informed by her background in anthropology. Her work explores myth, fairytale, and folklore as frameworks through which she examines the inner processes of the human psyche and personal development. Rooted in traditions of Surrealism, Symbolism, Expressionism, and book illustration, and informed by an interest in outsider art, her practice follows an intuitive approach guided by a rich personal symbology drawn from memory and dream narratives. Through this visual language, she explores themes of metamorphosis, vulnerability, otherness, and belonging.
