Debbie Lee
Debbie approached the studio with the idea of making a series of lithographs telling the story of Dante’s Inferno and we talked about her practice, which encompasses painting, printmaking and animation and how she had also been making picture scrolls influenced by her time working in India.
Debbie approached the studio with the idea of making a series of lithographs telling the story of Dante’s Inferno and we talked about her practice, which encompasses painting, printmaking and animation and how she had also been making picture scrolls influenced by her time working in India. The four panels tell the story of different stages of Dante’s journey, and each panel has a separate colourway to signal this change. There are a few common colours that run through the images that visually bind them; the red border and the pinkish tone were printed on every sheet.
In Debbie’s case, she had an ambitious goal to achieve so we decided to use the residency as more of a production residency. Debbie had to hold the final pieces in her mind when making colour approvals because we began printing the edition as soon as a colour was agreed.
