Martyn Cross

Martyn Cross (b. 1975, Yate) is an artist and painter living and working in Bristol, UK. His paintings are informed by ideas of human metamorphosis, collective consciousness, and the interconnectedness of living things.

Working on a scale that is both intimate and monumental, the paintings have a distinctive, muted colour palette, revealing an internal luminosity reminiscent of medieval manuscripts and frescoes. In 2025 he was artist-in-residence at The Roberts Institute of Art, Scotland, and he curated the group show Softly Radiant, Half Buried at Marianne Boesky Gallery, New York, USA. His work can be found in various public and private collections both nationally and internationally, including the Arts Council Collection, London, UK, and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, USA.

Selected exhibitions include: Gods Shaped of Mud, Marianne Boesky Gallery, New York, USA (2025); In Other Worlds: Acts of Translation, Focal Point Gallery, Southend-on-sea, UK (2025); Emotional Legacies, Burberry Seoul, South Korea (2025); Of Oil and Earth, Hales Gallery, London, UK (2024); That’s What’s Up!, Trotoar Gallery, Zagreb, Croatia (2024); All Shall Be Well, Marianne Boesky Gallery, New York, USA (2023); My Assembled Selves, Flatland Projects, Bexhill, UK (2023); The Moth and the Thunderclap, Stuart Shave Modern Art, London, UK (2023); Polireality, Hive Art Center, Beijing, China (2023); Ares, OHSH Projects at Cromwell Place, London, UK (2023); O, happiness! happiness!, Hales Gallery, London, UK (2022); Roarings Further Out, Marianne Boesky Gallery, New York, USA (2022); Myths of Observation, Hales Gallery, London, UK (2022); Green Minds, mepaintsme, online (2022); Earth Hymns, Ratio 3, San Francisco, USA (2021); Your Foot in My Face, Kingsgate Project Space, London, UK (2021); A Thought Sublime, Marianne Boesky, New York, USA (2021).
